While serving in the RSS, Shri Narendra Modi played several important roles on various occasions including the 1974 Navnirman anti-corruption agitation and the harrowing 19-month (June 1975 to January 1977) long Emergency when the fundamental rights of Indian citizens were strangled. Revive Gujarati youth power

Whenever there is a reference to youth power, nostalgic memories as a student leader at the helm of the historic Nav Nirman Movement of 1974 spring up in my mind.We as Nav Nirman leaders became heroes overnight, drawing amazing acclaim and support from all walks of life, because our revolutionary vision and ambitions reflected the inner aspirations of the people at large. At a time when elections on the university campuses in Gujarat are being shunned,it may be ironical indeed to place on record that Nav Nirman came into being thanks only to the 1973 amendment in the Gujarat University Act,which provided for the first time ever the election of 12 student senators. They got together only because of their common association as elected student leaders on the senate. The Nav Nirman Spirit in 1970s came to be truly acknowledged as a brand identity of Gujarati Youth.Let the Nav Nirman Spirit of the 70s also weave the same magic three decades later!  - Mukesh Patel

It built my value system

I was 21 years old, idealistic and felt society should be corruption- free.I was the pharmacy faculty representative on the Gujarat University senate.Nav Nirman gave me a chance to observe society and its systems closely.I was involved with the movement till the Chimanbhai Patel government was toppled.I dropped out in 1974 when some student leaders demanded mass promotions as I felt such a demand went against the movements basic principles and my personal belief that one should not take shortcuts. How can you tread the wrong path and talk about the truth I gave my final year exam and passed with distinction though I could have got an exemption.Nav Nirman actually built my value system. It gave me the courage to face a situation and stand by the truth, come what may. These values are still relevant for me and I run my business with the same do it spirit, ethics and honesty. It also taught me all about responsible leadership because I saw how common people suffered because the leaders were not able to take care of them after giving a call. This also helped me as GCCI president to convince, through peaceful and constructive means, the Gujarat government to abolish octroi after 150 years.
