Gandhiji view on Business :-
Though Gandhi accepted that businesses were needed in society, he believed that their role was not limited to profit-making. Gandhi proposed that the Trusteeship Model applied to firms. He argued that business owners should regard themselves as trustees, or safe keepers, of the wealth in their possession, and after taking out only what they needed for their sustenance, the rest of the profitshould be distributed amongst stakeholders of the business, including workers, suppliers, and community members. He further argued that, just like individuals, businesses too were responsible for maintaining high ethical standards. Gandhi advocated that entrepreneurs should adhere to the tenets of fairness, honesty and charity.
In a letter addressed to his son, Manilal, on business practices, Gandhi wrote, “Incur no debts, transact no business on credit, take up no business in forbidden goods and do not engage in a business to get rich quickly.”Therefore, in addition to shaping lasting political ideologies, Gandhi’s views on business ownership have been credited for contributing to modern day theories of Corporate Social Responsibility.
