UID – Aadhar card ~ Truth v/s Hype
Purpose :- In interim Budget Speech on July 6, 2009, Pranab Mukherjee said, "The setting up of the Unique Identification Authority of India is a major step in improving governance with regard to delivery of public services. This project is very close to my heart." The Standing Committee stated that a lack of clarity remains on several key issues, including: (a) purpose of issuing an Aadhar number; (b) whether having an Aadhar number may become mandatory in the future for availing benefits and services; (c) whether coverage will eventually exceed the current mandate of 20 crore persons.
