The 1857 revolt part 2 ( Role of women )

  When the history of India's fight for Independence comes to be written, the sacrifice made by the women of India will occupy the foremost place .

Woman's participation in India's freedom struggle began as early as 1817 when Bhima Bai Holkar fought bravely against the British colonel Malcolm and defeated him in guerilla warfare.

1.Rani laxmibai  - Jhansi

Laxmibai born in Varanasi as manu , she married to Gangadhar rao , a king of janshi in 1842 , after some time , Laxmibai gave birth to a boy but after 4 month , a boy died  . The couple forced to adopt a child due to the illness of king .A king also died when lazmibai was 18 year old .

Lord delhously tried to annex jhanshi under the policy of doctrine of lapse , but rani determined to defend janshi , she fought valiantly , she was able to acquire Gwalior from sindhias who were allies of English but eventually she reached her  martyrdom  at kalp near jansi.


2. Jhalkari Bai – Jhansi , durga dal

Laxmibai and Jhalkari Bai led the Durga Dal (women's army) recruits to repeatedly foil attacks by the British army.

Her appearance, which was strikingly similar to Laxmibai, helped the Jhansi army evolve a military strategy to deceive the British.

During April 1858, from inside the Jhansi fort, the queen (laxmibai) led her army and repulsed several attacks by the British and their native allies. One of her commanders, however, betrayed her and opened a well protected gate of the fort. When the fall of the fortress became imminent, her generals advised Laxmibai to escape with a handful of fighters.

Jhalakari bai  dressed up like Laxmibai and took command of the Jhansi army to confuse the britishers and by taking the benefit of this The Rani laxmibai slipped away from Jhansi on horseback.

3.Munder :-

she was the friedna dn advise rof rani laxmibai , she fought with rani laxmibai aginst bititishers up the last  breath of life, she dided just before rani laxmibai ,


4.Begam hazarat mahal :-Avadh

 Wife of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Hazrat Mahal was also known as the Begum of Avadh.

After her husband had been sent away in exile to Calcutta, she with the cooperation of a zealous band of supporters, like Sarafad-daulah, Maharaj Bal Krishna, Raja Jai Lal and above all Mammon Khan worked incessantly to revive the fortunes of Avadh. She seized control of Lucknow in association with the revolutionary forces and set up her son, Prince Birjis Qadr, as the King of Avadh.

  She was driven from pillar to post, but she made her retreat with fortitude. She rejected with contempt the promises of allowance and status held out to her by the British against whom her hatred was unrelenting.

 In the end after bearing misfortune and misery throughout the period of resistance, she found asylum in Nepal where she died in 1879.

5.Rani draupadi bai :-Dhar


Draupdi bai was the queen of dhar , A couple adopt a youger brother ( Aaanand rao )of king just before a day of the death of king .

In oppose to other case , britishers  accept him as king of dhar , but Rani drupadi bai decided to join the revolt.

on 22 october , britishers attack  on the fort of dhar and rani fought bravely with other sepoys but unforchunetly lost the battle.

6.Urda devi :- Sikander badh , lucknow

British army trying to enter siknder bagh , but she fought single handly with British army and stop tham for many hours .

7.Balika maina :- Bithoor fort

She was daughter of nana shaheb peshwa . bitishers attach on bithoor fort in 1857 , but during night when war stop, she think btitihsers went bak and she came out to form.

britishers trap her , and asked for the information about rebels inside fort , but she didn’t say a single word and finally britishers thow a her in fire and killed a small child.

8.Chauhan rani  :- Anoop nagar

She was a wife of the raja pratap chandi , a king of anoopnagar, when king died , britishers annex the kingdom under the doctrine of lapse , since that Chauhan rani waiting for the chance and 1857 revolt gave her a chance , rani faught with bahadur shah and won her kingdom back and rule anoop nagr for 15 months but after that , when britishers successfully  beat the rebels she loosed anoopnagar

9.Avantibai lodho :- Ramgrah,Madhyapradesh

She was a wife of laxman singh , A king of ramgrah , he died in 1850 , and then delhouse succeed it under doctrine of lapse , when revolt 1857 took place she got the chance and fought with britishers. But after some time  , when she felt that they were unable to fight with british army then she went to forest and start guerrilla fight to british in the end when all methods filed she killed her self with her own sword.
