The revolt of 1857 part 1 ( causes )
Economic cause :-
1.Farmers:- Oudh , In which every agriculturally family had a member in army , 75000 men in army were from oudh , whatever happen there affefct the army.
farmers were forced to switch from subsistence farming to commercial crops such as indigo, jute, coffee and tea. This resulted in hardship to the farmers and increases in food prices.
2.Craftman :- British policy discourage Indian craft item and encourage the Britain made items , this make Indian highly skilled craftsman unemployed.
3.Zaminadars – zamindars and poligars lost their control over the land due to the (1.) Abolition of their rights by colonial state (2) Sell land to meet the higher demand from British in form of revenue tax
Religion Related :-
1. The introduction of Enfield rifle, the cartridge of which was greased with animal fat, provided the spark.
2.In afghan war : A society ( biradari) oppose the men who fought in afghan war cause there they were forced to eat and drink whatever come to them
3.The rumours in sepoy that , Powder of pig bone mixed in atta to disturb their religious rules
4.Penetration of Christian missionaries in some regiment of army
5.Taxing land belong to temples and mosques
Political Causes: :-
The policy of doctrine of laspe
1.Nana Sahib was refused
pension, as he was the adopted son of Peshwa Baji Rao II
2.Rani Laxmi Bai’s adopted son
was not recognized by the EastIndia Company as the thier to Jhansi
3.Bahadur Shah's successor was
denied the right to live at the red fort
4.The British did not obey the
treaties sometimes and they were broken according to the need of the British
and the nawabs at that time could not trust any treaty at all.
caste :-
1. Crossing sea mean the lost of caste a :- Barrackpur regiment ordered to go to Burma in 1824, who refused were disbanded and those who led opposition were hanged
2.In starting, Indian soliders live in group of theier caste but with the extention of army, this system do not possible and al, soilders forced to live togahteher, thi creat the un happiness in soliders who come form upper class of caste.
Discrimination of Indian soldiers :-
1.Discrimination between the Indian
and the British soldiers. Indian soldiers were paid low salaries compared to
his British counterpart; they could not rise above the rank of subedar and were
racially insulted.
2.They were also grieved because of the refusal of British to pay Foreign Service
allowance (batta) while fighting in remote regions such as Punjab and Sindh.
Rumours :-
1. there were reports that "holy men" were mysteriously circulating chapatis and lotus flowers among the sepoys.
2. There was also a rumour that the British were contaminating the sepoys flour with ground up pig and cow bones
